A certain satellite radio DJ has made Mary Gauthier a regular on his playlist. Something about her being a unique lyricist, with an ability to illuminate even moments of devastation and despair in beautiful hues. His name is Bob Dylan, and his word is good for us.
Mary Gauthier (Go-Shay) found her voice in the darkest recesses of her native Louisiana and turned it into a musical world all her won. Universal acclaim has rightly followed her ever since, every step of the way.
"There's dust, phlegm and hard time in Mary Gauthier's voice. Oh yes, shame, regret and humiliation, too.
A parched whisper of a thing, Gauthier's voice communicates a character both cowed and careworn, someone so deprived, her behavior might at any moment turn depraved. … If she keeps this up, one day she may assume the mantle of Johnny Cash…”

“With songwriting as powerful as hers, there's no need to go looking for qualifiers…She's a unique, intrinsically valuable musical voice. And there's never a surplus of those.” - Los Angeles Times |
