The lives of a Toronto anthropologist and a 16‑year old Inuk cross paths during 24 hours of darkness in Pond Inlet, Nunavut. Danielle is a scientist from the big city; Piuyuq is a local girl with big dreams. When Piuyuq’s best friend commits suicide, both their lives change forever.
Performed in Inuktitut and English, this unique piece of theatre incorporates multiple story-telling styles, languages and world-views, using text, movement, video, and live music. By offering a comprehensive, engaging insight into the North’s experience of the arctic darkness and the South’s complex relationship to it, Night inspires its participants and audiences to re-evaluate their personal and global perspectives of the human experience in the Circumpolar World.
Created over three Arctic winters in Iceland and Nunavut by Toronto’s Human Cargo, and commissioned by the National Arts Centre. Night will premiere at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa before touring across the North to Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Inuvik and Iqaluit. |
