  • Treasures from the Vault

Deanna Bowen (Canada),
Christopher Cozier (Trinidad, W.I.),
Michael Fernandes (Canada),
Maud Sulter (Scotland)

The works in Reading the Image: Poetics of the Black Diaspora engage in a conversation about how blackness is represented in art and what personal and collective personhood can mean. The artists explore the role of black people in the development of the modern world, Christianity and the church as a social institution in the black world, the notions of trauma and self-making, and community and racial formation. Most importantly, they create their own stories.

A Selection from our Collection

We seize a rare opportunity to present some of the outstanding
and very large scale works in the Public Art Gallery permanent collection,
which are safely stored away but seldom seen by the public... or us.
